Packy, the Oregon Zoo’s most famous elephant, cel ebrates his 42nd birthday with the help of zoo visitors, Saturday, April I7from lOa.tn.to4p.m. Several events are planned. Keepers will share their elephant experiences and demonstrate Packy’s training program. The highlight of the social event occurs at 2 p.m. when keepers present Packy with his giant birthday cake, a 40-pound whole-wheat concoction topped with peanut butter frosting, apples, carrots, and celery. Visitors can also meet costumed elephants Eliza and Elliot w hile they enjoy face painting and games. Packy, the first elephant born in the Western Hemi sphere in more than 45 years, was bom on April 14, 1962 making international news. He is the oldest and largest male Asian elephant in the United States. He has fathered seven calves, including 21-year old Sung-Surin ("Sun shine”) and Rama, both of whom currently live at the zoo.
